March Planned for Labor Day

August 17, 2018

The Rev. Gregory Livingston and his church, New Hope Baptist Church of West Humboldt Park, held a news conference on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 announcing that they plan to hold a demonstration on the Kennedy Expressay with plans to shut down traffic from O’Hare International Airport on Labor Day.

“We need to get Rahm’s attention because we are really following (Mahatma) Gandhi’s pattern,” Livingston shared with the group of protestors. “Gandhi said first they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then we win.”

Livington’s group shutdown Lake Shore Drive in early August with an anti-violence March.

The March and other factors caused Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Police Department to deploy 500 plus police officers from well-healed communities to the South and West sides to stem the tide of gun violence that continues to make headline news across the Nation.

Early in his administration, Trump had considered sending in the National Guard and other military to assist City police. Weekend prior to last, there were 72 cases of shooting with about 13 people dead as a result of violence in Chicago.

One resident of the City’s south side said that they noticed the increased police presence.

“There was the blurt, and chirp of blue lights and white and blue SUV's all over,” says a Southside Resident. “ Police Cars were racing here and there. I hope that it made a difference.”

Livingston’s shut down is scheduled to occur between 11 a.m. to about 1:00 pm on Labor Day. Individuals traveling to and from O’Hare are encouraged to make alternate plans.
