CLC Electrical Engineering Technology program receives $50,000 grant

The College of Lake County's electrical engineering technology program has received a $50,000 grant from the Dart Foundation. The funding will finance new lab equipment, including specialized generators and software upgrades scheduled to be installed in the 2018-19 academic year.

"We are excited and very grateful to receive the grant funding from the Dart Foundation," said Michelle Leonard, chair of the electrical engineering program. "Having the latest equipment will make our graduates more competitive than ever in the job market."

Electronics technicians use engineers' plans to design, develop and test electronic equipment and electrical machinery. They work in research, development, quality control, design, production or sales. Graduates can find work in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, sustainable energy and biomedicine.

CLC's program offers an Associate in Applied Science degree, and certificates include: electrical/electronic maintenance, electronics technology, fiber optics technician and wireless networking security. The 2017 median pay nationwide was $63,660 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

"With a certificate, you can learn a marketable skill in two semesters and find a job that pays at least $20 per hour locally," Leonard said. "As with most careers, the more education you receive, the more you'll earn. Right now, the economy is good, and there's a desperate need for skilled workers. I'm getting calls every day from employers who have open positions."

The Dart Foundation is a private family foundation established by the Dart Container Corporation founder William A. Dart and his wife Claire T. Dart. The Foundation supports projects that enhance education, especially in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math, and those that improve the quality of life in specific communities.
