Waukegan Symphony Orchestra Hosts Gremainic Tradittion Concer

Maestro Blackwelder

Waukegan, IL (May 2, 2018) –The Waukegan Symphony Orchestra of the Waukegan Park District has announced that conductor Stephen Blackwelder will leave his post at the end of the 2017-18 season following the May 20, 2018 concert.

During his eighteen seasons at WSO, Blackwelder was instrumental in helping the symphony evolve into a regional community orchestra. His tenure with the WSO has seen inspired performances showcasing a wide variety of orchestral pieces. Blackwelder's leadership has been an important part of the success of the annual "Do-It-Yourself" Messiah concert performed by the Waukegan Symphony and Concert Chorus since 2007.

Mr. Blackwelder announced his departure in an email on Tuesday to the members of the symphony. He stated, "I am gratified by the consistent and trusting rapport that we have been able to establish together in these last several years...It's my philosophy that music making is about expressing instead of impressing--- it's one of the few, blessedly non-competitive activities left to human beings. Does that make music a form of love? Probably...

The last concert under Maestro Blackwelder's leadership will be The Germanic Traditions on Sunday, May 20, 2018 at 4pm at the Trapp auditorium at the Waukegan High School, 2325 Brookside Avenue. Tickets purchased in advance are available from Brown Paper Tickets, https://wsocc6.brownpapertickets.com, and the Jack Benny Center for the Arts, 39 Jack Benny Drive. Tickets are also available at the door. Adult tickets are $15, Senior and Military $10, and Students 19 years of age and older are $7. Students 18 and under are free.
